Let's Talk About The FDA

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

According to fda.gov the FDA "protects consumers from harmful exposure to chemicals in food that would have an adverse impact on human health, through a comprehensive, science-driven, and modernized approach." As of September 2021, the FDA approved over 3,000 food additives, flavor enhancers, sweeteners, colorants, emulsifiers and more.

While the FDA has approved thousands of food additives, it is important to note that not all additives pose health risks. Many additives have undergone extensive testing and are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by experts. However, concerns have been raised about certain additives and their potential health effects. Some additives have been associated with allergic reactions, migraines, cancer or hyperactivity in sensitive individuals.

Among the multitude of additives approved by the FDA, a few chemicals and toxins have been linked to health concerns. It is crucial to understand that the presence of an additive does not automatically imply it is harmful. Rather, the level of exposure and individual susceptibility are important factors to consider. Some studies have suggested that certain additives, when consumed in large quantities or under specific circumstances, may be associated with health risks. These include:

1. Artificial Food Colorings: Some synthetic food colorings, such as Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6, have been linked to hyperactivity and behavioral issues, particularly in children.

2. Nitrites and Nitrates: These additives are commonly used in processed meats to enhance flavor and preserve freshness. However, excessive consumption of nitrites and nitrates has been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, such as colorectal cancer.

3. Trans Fats: While not an additive in the traditional sense, trans fats are partially hydrogenated oils used to improve the texture and shelf life of processed foods. Consuming high levels of trans fats has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and other health problems.

Here are a few examples of approved additives that are linked to terminal sickness.

Before feeling discouraged on the sad truth of chemicals and the harsh effects, there is empowerment in knowledge. Stay informed, educate yourself and keep reading my blogs! There is a blog available that informs about food labels and the misunderstanding and information of them. Also, there is a list of recommended products for a toxic/chemical free home.

So, keep reading and enjoy this life changing information!
